Sunrise, sunset

Conversation at a friend's housewarming party on Sunday afternoon:
(clueless girl): So which direction is the dining room facing?
(me): Well just look at the shadow of the table. Sun's setting from there, so it's actually west.
(clueless girl): Huh? Which direction is that??
(rex): It's west.
(clueless girl's equally clueless fiance now referred to as clueless f): Actually my friend said that we're in the southern hemisphere so our angle to the sun makes it look like it actually comes from the north.
So that *points to direction of the sun* could be north. Your dining room is north-facing.
(clueless girl): yeh he likes finding the direction of things, he even bought a compass.
(clueless f): yeh I'll bring it with me next time ha ha
Someone needs a lesson in Science 101. The sun always sets in the west, it's not exactly west depending on the season, but it sure as hell ain't north!
It's even more amazing as clueless bf works in a prestigious software engineering company, and clueless girl used to work at the same company but now works somewhere else.
Wouldn't wanna be shipwrecked/marooned on a desert island with them.
